PyMOL Install Instructions

These install instructions assume you have installed PyMOL version 0.98 or higher and that you have downloaded and decompressed the LifeScienceWeb clients.

1. You must copy the "lswclients" folder to one of two places. You can choose either location, but one options requires administrator access. Follow either instructions 2a or 2b depending on your preference. You can see these options in Figure 1.

2a. The first place you can copy the "lswclients" folder is you home directory. To identify where PyMOL expects you home directory to be you can type the following into PyMOL:

    PyMOL> import os
    PyMOL> print os.path.expanduser('~')

2b. Alternatively you can copy the "lswclients" folder to PyMOL's internal data path. This varies between operating systems, so to find out where this is type the following into PyMOL:

    PyMOL> import os
    PyMOL> print os.environ['PYMOL_PATH']

3. Copy the "lswclients" folder into the directory you chose from 2a or 2b. An example is shown in Figure 2.

4. Now you must tell PyMOL about the new plugins.  You do this from the "Plugin->Install Plugin..." menu option as shown in Figure 3.

5. For each plugin you want to install, you must follow from steps 4 on. The available plugins can be found within the "lswclients" folder in the directory "lsw-clients". For example, to install the MutDB client select the "lswclients/lsw-clients/lsw_services_mutdb.py" file as shown in Figure 4. The "lsw_shared.py" file is required for the other plugins to work.

6. Once you install the plugins of interest you must restart PyMOL.

7. After restarting PyMOL you will see the plugins in the "Plugin->LSW Services" menu as seen in Figure 5.
